Dollar US UP, Euro Down:

https://mishtalk.com/2017/02/23/le-pen-calls-for-europe-of-nations-blasts-eu-as-the-problem/

Will Target2 Crash Europe’s Financial System? by Egon Von Greyerz

Hard Target2 is an action movie with a life or death hunt in the wilderness. But as always, the real Target2 is a lot more exciting than the movie. Because the real Target2 can bring down the European Union’s financial system, and the consequences would lead to a global contagion, crisis and possible collapse.

What is fascinating is that virtually no one is aware of Target2 or its ramifications. This is an EU scheme that few understand and even fewer realize the dire consequences of. Target2 is likely to cost European taxpayers at least €1 trillion but it could easily rise to €1.5 to €2 trillion or more. But as we know, the taxpayers have no money so it will be European governments that will have to foot the bill. But they haven’t got any money either and will of course print it. And this my friends is another guaranteed reason for hyperinflation. A Beppe Grillo victory in Italy or Marine Le Pen in France, could be some of the many triggers that will create havoc within the EU and its financial system. It would definitely make the €1 trillion of Target2 funding worthless.

So what makes Target2 so dangerous? It is a Trans-European settlement system which facilitates the switching of liabilities from private banks to central banks and eventually to taxpayers. If a Spanish company buys goods from Germany, which is financed by its bank, this debt is sold to the Spanish Central Bank, that in turn refinances the debt with the ECB. The ECB in its turn raises money from primarily German banks and investors. The same thing happens if, for example, an Italian depositor wants to transfer his €1 million deposit from an Italian bank to a German bank in order to protect his money from the risk of devaluation or bail-in.

What we are seeing in Europe is a massive capital flight from the Mediterranean countries to Germany and Luxembourg. Many investment funds are based in Luxembourg. The consequence of this is that German investors have lent almost €800 billion to southern Europe, and Luxembourg investors €200 billion. The total of €1 trillion is guaranteed by the ECB and lent to central banks in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece. Through Target2, Spain is borrowing €328 billion, Italy €364 billion, with Portugal and Greece borrowing another €150B.

Germany & Luxembourg financing bankrupt Southern Europe with €1 trillion

The ECB has always considered Target2 to be a settlement system between European central banks rather than a financing vehicle. No rating agency has understood the consequences of Target2.

We know of course that the Mediterranean countries will not and cannot repay up to €1 trillion. As often is the case, it is not the borrower who is in trouble here but the lenders. Therefore, Germany is in bigger trouble than Italy, Spain, or Portugal. Those countries can’t pay, so Germany will have to foot the bill. But German banks, led by Deutsche Bank, have extremely weak balance sheets and massive derivative positions. So they are in no position to settle. That leaves the ECB and European central banks which will need to crank up the printing presses.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/yellen-says-a-march-interest-rate-hike-is-likely-appropriate-2017-03-03

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-global-economy-idUSKBN16A1GE

Wednesday Report…

Posted on March 1, 2017, 10:53 pm by Rambus
Tonight I would like to focus in on the US dollar as it plays such an important role in the PM complex, commodities, and other markets as well. Most of these charts we’ve been following for a very long time paint a bullish picture for the US dollar and for the most part a bearish picture for the currencies that make up the dollar.
This first chart is a daily line chart which shows the breakout and  backtest to the top rail of the almost 2 year consolidation pattern.
Below is a short term daily bar chart which shows the US dollar breaking out above the neckline today. Keep in mind this is a very short term look.
This next daily chart for the US dollar shows a big double H&S bottom with the smaller H&S bottom we just looked at on the daily chart above, as the backtest to neckline #2. Most investors are looking at the price action above neckline #2 as a H&S top which it could be, but with all the other Chartology in play I think the probability is low.
This next chart is a weekly look which puts the double H&S bottom in perspective. As you can see the double H&S bottom is just part of the much bigger bullish expanding falling wedge, which I view as a halfway pattern to the upside. This chart shows you where the bull market started in 2011 which for the most part shows a series of higher highs and higher lows. Another important clue the major uptrend channel is valid is the number of times the bottom rail has been successfully tested. Until the bottom rail of the major uptrend channel is broken to the downside the bulls are in charge.
This next chart for the US dollar is a longer term weekly look which shows the massive 8 point diamond consolidation pattern. Usually a diamond will begin to form as an expanding pattern of some kind, and then the right side of the diamond will show the price action constricting. There is also a long point in a diamond formation that is the longest point, as shown by reversal points 5 and 6, which begins the contraction. Note the massive impulse move once the diamond was broken to the upside, which is confirmation the diamond is valid.
This next chart is a 10 year weekly combo chart which has gold on top and the US dollar on the bottom. What this chart shows is the massive positive divergence the US dollar had vs gold at the 2011 high on gold, and the low on the US dollar. That 2011 low on the US dollar began its bull market, and the bear market for gold. The 1305 area is where the top rail of the blue falling wedge is located, and if gold can take out that area it will be a positive for the bulls. On the other hand, if the bulls fail to push gold higher and the US dollar begins its next impulse rally in earnest, then at a minimum gold could decline to the bottom rail.
As most of you know there is a pretty strong inverse correlation between gold and the US dollar which isn’t perfect, but close enough to pay attention. This next combo chart shows the H&S bottom on the US dollar and the H&S top on gold, as shown by the brown rectangle. You can see how critical the 1305 area is where the top rail of the downtrend channel and the H&S neckline intersect. A clean breakout above 1305 with a backtest would get me bullish on the PM complex once again, but until that happens the stock markets are my playground for now.
Below is a 40 year look at the US dollar which shows the massive bullish falling wedge with the backtest to the top rail being our current horizontal trading range. Note how the big H&S top that formed at the 2000 high and its neckline has been holding support, as shown by the neckline extension rail. As hard as I try I can’t find anything bearish about the 2011 bull market.
If the US dollar is going to embark on its next impulse leg up then the euro should do just the opposite and have a strong impulse move down. The weekly chart below is the euro’s equivalent trading range vs the US dollars nearly 2 year trading range. The bottom rail is placed where it is because of where the breakout gap occurred. Just like the US dollar, the euro has also experienced two backtests.
This weekly chart for the $XEU shows the triangle consolidation pattern that has formed below another consolidation pattern the blue bearish rising wedge. This is how bear markets look with one consolidation pattern forming below the next, until a reversal pattern is built out.
Here is a monthly chart for the $XEU we’ve been following for a very long time which shows how the upper channel could double in size to the downside, as shown by the black rectangles which are the same height.
Below is the other very long term chart for the euro which shows the massive H&S top. The price objective for the massive H&S top would be all the way down to its all time low around the 82 area. If that were to occur where would that put the US dollar?
This next chart is a ratio chart which compares the $XEU:$USD. When the ratio is falling the $XEU is weaker than the US dollar. Note the massive multi year H&S top with the strong impulse move down once the neckline was broken to the downside. When the initial impulse leg down ended there needed to be a consolidation pattern to build out to consolidate that huge move down. For the last 2 years that consolidation pattern that has been building out is the blue expanding triangle. Note how the bottom rail held support initially with a small bounce telling us the bottom rail of the expanding triangle is hot. This is a common development that many times leads the the final breakout.
This last chart for tonight is another ratio chart which compares the $XSF:$USD. Just like the ratio chart above the Swiss Franc vs the US dollar is also building out a massive H&S top and is currently testing the neckline.
The really big question we have to ask ourselves is what do we do if the US dollar begins another large impulse leg up? The last time this happened in 2014 and 2015 currencies, the PM complex and commodities took a big hit to the downside. Is history going to repeat again? Stay tuned as things are finally starting to get interesting. All the best…Rambus

Commentaires de John Murphy:

TWO-YEAR TREASURY YIELDS REACHES SEVEN-YEAR HIGH… Chart 1 shows the 2-Year Treasury yield climbing above 1.30% today for the first time in seven years. That shorter term yield is more sensitive to the potential for a rate hike than longer-range maturities. That suggests that fixed income traders are taking expectations for a March rate hike by the Fed more seriously. Fed fund futures yesterday placed the odds for a March hike near 66%. That suggests that bond yields in general are probably headed higher as well. That’s also giving a big boost to the U.S. dollar.

DOLLAR TURNS UP … Chart 2 shows the U.S. Dollar Index ETF (UUP) climbing to the highest level in six weeks. The dollar is following the 2-Year Treasury yield higher on increased expectations for a March rate hike. Chartwise, the UUP was due for an upturn anyway. Previous messages showed the UUP having retraced 50% of its August/January rally, which put it in a logical support point. Chart 2 also shows « gap support » formed in mid-November right after the election (see box). One final point. The numerals show that the UUP has been in a « wave four » Elliott wave correction since the start of the year. Uptrends usually have five waves. That makes the 2017 decline a correction in an ongoing uptrend. That increases the odds that a « wave five » advance is starting.

Leadership (Bio-Tech) breakout; Good sign for broad market

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-03-01/us-warms-trump-3-4-americans-approve-trump-address

Trump

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/consumer-confidence-hits-15-year-high-2017-02-24

After short pause, US corporate insiders return to selling shares at a torrential pace

TMV Update…

TMV is a 3 X short etf for TLT whch has been building out a triangle consolidation pattern since the middle of December of last year. It’s currently testing the bottom rail at the potential 6th reversal point. This area is a low risk entry point using the bottom rail of the blue triangle as the sell/stop. I’m going to buy 225 shares at the market at 22.31 with the sell/stop just below the bottom rail at 21.31 risking one point.
